Description d’une nouvelle variété du genre Vanilla (Orchidaceae) du Brésil et des Guyanes et clarification taxinomique de l’identité de Vanilla ensifolia et Vanilla fimbriata

Résumé
Si quelques espèces de vanilles, parfois réduites à une endémicité biogéographique plus ou moins restreinte, se distinguent facilement par leurs morphologies atypiques, de nombreux taxons, observés dans de larges répartitions géographiques, présentent souvent d’importantes variabilités morphométriques et sont difficiles à déterminer. Pour clarifier l’identité taxinomique de quelques-uns, plusieurs groupes de plantes sont ici discutés. Vanilla ensifolia est une espèce généralement traitée dans la synonymie de Vanilla odorata. Des éléments discriminants, qui semblent ne jamais être pris en compte, séparent pourtant clairement ces deux taxons. Vanilla ensifolia et ses caractères distinctifs sont argumentés. Un groupe de plantes appartenant à Vanilla labellopapillata est décrit sur la base de distinctions morphologiques et écologiques au rang de variété. La description est accompagnée d’illustrations. Une carte de répartition géographique de Vanilla ensifolia, Vanilla labellopapillata et de sa variété et une clé de détermination des espèces à feuilles lancéolées à étroitement lancéolées et présentes dans la zone néotropicale sont également proposées. Enfin, nos examens minutieux d’un bon nombre de spécimens guyanais attribuables à Vanilla fimbriata montrent que la plante est trop étroitement liée à Vanilla odorata pour représenter clairement une espèce distincte. Nous évoquons ici l’hypothèse que Vanilla fimbriata ne soit qu’une variété de Vanilla odorata. Par ailleurs, la liste des orchidées guyanaises publiée par le Muséum national d’histoire naturelle traite Vanilla labellopapillata dans la synonymie de Vanilla fimbriata. Une brève discussion est abordée à ce sujet.
Abstract
If a few species of vanilla, sometimes reduced to a more or less restricted biogeographical endemicity, are easily distinguished by their atypical morphologies, numerous taxa, observed in wide geographical distributions, present very significant morphometric variabilities and are difficult to determine. To clarify the taxonomic identity of some of them, several groups of plants are discussed here. Vanilla ensifolia is a species generally treated in the synonymy of Vanilla odorata. Discriminating elements, which never seem to be taken into account, nevertheless clearly separate these two taxa. Vanilla ensifolia and its distinctive characters are argued. A group of plants belonging to Vanilla labellopapillata is described on the basis of morphological and ecological distinctions at the rank of variety. The description is accompanied by illustrations. A geographic distribution map of Vanilla ensifolia, Vanilla labellopapillata and its variety, a key to determine the species with lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate leaves present in the neotropical zone are also proposed. Finally, our careful examinations of a good number of French Guiana specimens attributable to Vanilla fimbriata show that the plant is too closely related to Vanilla odorata to clearly represent a distinct species. We suggest here the hypothesis that Vanilla fimbriata is only a variety of Vanilla odorata. Furthermore, the list of French Guiana orchids published by the National Museum of Natural History treats Vanilla labellopapillata in the synonymy of Vanilla fimbriata. A brief discussion is given on this subject.
